Rough idling isn’t just a comfort issue. It usually points to an underlying mechanical or sensor problem that needs attention before it gets worse.
If you’ve noticed your vehicle idling poorly, especially when starting cold or waiting at a stop sign, here are six potential causes worth looking into.
1. Dirty or Faulty Spark Plugs
Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in your engine’s cylinders. When they become dirty, fouled, or worn out, combustion becomes inconsistent. That’s when you’ll start to notice rough idling, misfires, or even hesitation when accelerating.
If it’s been a while since your last tune-up or you’ve been using lower-grade fuel, your spark plugs might be overdue for replacement. They’re a simple part, but play a critical role in how smoothly your engine runs.
2. Clogged Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors deliver a precise amount of gasoline into the engine. Over time, they can clog with carbon deposits or dirt, which throws off the air-fuel balance and creates an uneven idle. This is especially common in vehicles driven mostly on short trips or with infrequent fuel system cleanings.
If your car feels like it’s sputtering or pulsing while idling, or if fuel economy has dropped, dirty injectors could be part of the problem.
3. Vacuum Leaks

The mass air flow sensor tells your vehicle’s computer how much air is entering the engine, which helps it determine the correct fuel mixture. If the MAF sensor is dirty or faulty, it can throw off this balance, leading to rough idle, hesitation, or stalling.
You might notice the engine bogging down during idle or slow acceleration. Cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor can often resolve the issue and improve performance across the board.
6. Problems With the EGR Valve
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve helps control emissions by recirculating small amounts of exhaust gases back into the intake. If it becomes clogged with carbon buildup or sticks open, it can create an unstable idle and reduce engine efficiency.
